Background & History

The evolution of public procurement regulation in The Gambia

Our History

From inception to becoming a leading procurement regulatory body

The Gambia Public Procurement Authority (GPPA) was established in 2001 as part of the Government's commitment to reforming public financial management and ensuring transparency in the use of public resources. The establishment followed recommendations from various public finance assessments that highlighted the need for a robust procurement regulatory framework.

Prior to the establishment of GPPA, public procurement in The Gambia was fragmented, with each ministry and agency conducting procurement without standardized procedures. This led to inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and limited competition in government contracts.

Today, GPPA has evolved into a modern regulatory institution that oversees procurement across all government entities, ensuring value for money and promoting good governance in public spending.
